Architecture Walk

Today wasn’t the best day for a walking tour in Albany. It was rainy and cold. Although the weather wasn’t working out in our favor it didn’t stop us from learning. I learned a lot about the different types of architecture and could group similar buildings together due to their time period. I wouldn’t be able to do this is it wasn’t for the architecture on the building. Many of the churches had a more gothic look. Gothic architecture consists of pointed arches, ribbed vaulting, and flying buttresses. Another common architecture technique I saw today was Romanesque architecture. Romanesque architecture was known to have high, round arches, sturdy piers, and decorative arcading. Many of the buildings with Romanesque architecture were made for the wealthy. Buildings that contained Romanesque architecture in Albany were City Hall and the Capitol.  Romanesque architecture and Gothic architecture oftentimes go hand in hand and work together to make a building look very nice. Churches in particular are a good example of this. Today we visited St. Mary’s church in Albany. The outside didn’t seem like anything special but you could see some gothic architecture. On the inside it was beautiful and to me had more of a roman feel. Today was overall a great day a learned a lot about architecture that I didn’t know before.
