Washington & Stormking

Today was more exciting than most. It was both fun an educational. We visited General George Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh, New York. It was the nation’s first owned historic site. Our tour guide was extremely friendly and engaged us throughout our entire time there. I personally really admired her attire. She dressed like a woman of the 1800’s and played the part perfectly. I thought it was outrageous that she dresses in 6-8 layers of clothing each day especially in the summer time, I’m sure it gets extremely hot and uncomfortable.  One fact that I found interesting was that Washington denied the idea of him becoming King after the war. He did not want America to become a monarchy what so ever. We got to look at over 1300 artifacts from the 18th century. I loved looking at all the different types of swords that were used on the battlefield. My favorite was a gold one but unfortunately I did not get a picture of it. After leaving Washington’s Headquarters we went to Washington’s encampment that was a let down compared to what we just saw. Our tour guide was creepy and would have kept there for 3 days if it weren’t for Michael. One cool thing that I did learn there was about the different type of medicines they would use in the 18th century and the types of illnesses that would occur. Oftentimes they would give them medicine to make them throw up or go to the bathroom because they believe that the illness would exit the body and you would be cured. After leaving the encampment we went to my favorite place of the day, Stormking. Stormking is an outdoor abstract art gallery that I haven’t seen anything like before. Some exhibits easily fit in with nature and the landscape surrounding it while others did not. My favorite piece was called Three Legged Buddha. It was unique compared to all of the others. It looked like more of a monument rather than industrial art. The ones that looked more industrial looked like they didn’t belong there in my opinion. I also really enjoyed the pink fountain, which looked like rock candy and made me hungry. Today was a great day and I hope to bring my family back to Stormking to show them what I saw. I hope to see more things like Stormking over the next few weeks; I enjoy them much more than house tours.
