Crematorium & Mullany House
Today we visited Oakwood Cemetary's crematorium. I have lived in Troy all my life and have yet to visit there. It was really dark in the church and bright and beautiful in the creamatorium room. I think it's awesome that the Earl family all rest in peace together at Oakwood and that Gardner Earl respected his sons wishes to be cremated. The church was small but very beautiful. My favorite part of visiting the church was admiring the Tiffany windows. After visiting the church and crematorium we took a tour through the cemetery. There I got to see all of the different iconography that lies on the tombstones. Some of the common iconography that I saw were slanted crosses, angels, ferns, and biblical characters. I'm looking forward to our iconography project where I get to look up the meanings of these things and hopefully get to think about what I'll want to eventually put on my tombstone. After visiting the cemetary we went to Kate Mullany's house. She was a very significant women during the industrial revolution. She started the collar workers union in the 1850's which was unusual for women to be in the workforce in the first place. I wish Mullany's home was in better shape when we went to visit. I thought it was cool that Hillary Clinton came to visit Kate Mullany's home because she is oftentimes forgotten about and the house isn't in the best of neighborhoods. I was disturbed at the fact that there was still a dead pigeon in the home even though people have been in and out working on restoring it. Hopefully after Kate Mullany's home is restored I can go back and see what it looks like then compare it to the pictures I took today.
